It’s Snowtime!

How much snow did you get?!

When my kids were young, they brought snowballs inside and put them in the freezer. Some days they took them out and played with them, and other days they just checked to make sure they were still there. I think they expected that the snowballs would last until summer (which they did not!)!

Snow gives us a whole new material to create with that many of us don’t often get. Here’s a few ways to take advantage of this opportunity, no matter what your age!

Regain Your Wonder

We often lose our sense of wonder as we grow older, but there’s something about snow that brings it back. Go out and walk around as if you are seeing everything for the first time. Listen carefully to new sounds. Close your eyes for a few seconds and feel the air surround you. Look at the way the snow sits on houses, trees, street signs. Take your gloves off and feel the snow in your hands.

Winter Olympics

Compete in the regular-people version of the Winter Olympics with a snowball toss, an obstacle course, and ice bowling (freeze 10 water bottles and roll a frozen water balloon).

Scavenger Hunt

Hide little toys outside and give your kids a list to find them.

Snow Painting

Mix food coloring and water and take it outside with an eyedropper, straw, spray bottle, or spoon to paint designs on fresh snow.

Snow Sculptures

Sure, make a snowman! Then make a fish, or a monster, or whatever you want! Paint with the aforementioned colored water.

Snow Castles

You’ve heard of sandcastles, use the same tools to create snow castles! Just pack snow into a cup or small bucket and flip it over. How high can you build yours?

Snow Jar

Layer colored snow in a jar like you would colored sand. Then watch as it melts and all the colors mix together!

Stomp Art

Stomp around in the snow in the shape of a circle, spiral, or other interesting design. Channel your inner Simon Beck!

Frozen Bubbles

Grab a bottle of bubble solution (you don’t save those from the summer?!) or make your own and add food coloring. Blow bubbles outdoors and watch as they freeze!

Bring some snow inside

Explore snow in a bin in the comfort of your cozy kitchen. Toss in some ice cubes, spoons, cups and plastic penguins for a fun sensory bin. Pat some down in a tray and paint with watercolors.

Let me know which activities you enjoy! Send or post photos!

Stay warm and stay healthy,

Susan
